What happens on the outside is only a reflection of the inside. Fine lines, wrinkles, acne and more are all reflections of how well we are working on the inside. Even with access to some of the best skin care chemists in the world because my father worked for Avon, in my late 20’s I couldn't find a solution to painful and embarrassing adult acne and eczema. It wasn’t until I started focusing on my overall health instead of just my skin was I able to learn that beauty is more than skin deep!
The skin is the body's largest elimination organ, so when our digestion, assimilation and elimination are working correctly excess toxins should not accumulate in the skin. If toxins are not moving through preferred pathways they will often show up on our skin.
Whether our skin challenges are with acne or aging, many of the natural remedies I use and share are the same. Stress causes hormonal imbalances differently in each of us. In some, it will break down collagen in the skin and cause aging; while in others, it causes hormonal acne no matter what our age. Controlling hormones, especially those related to stress, is one of the first steps to balancing skin issues. I work with my clients to find stress relieving practices that fit into their lives. These may include deep breathing, Dead Sea mineral salts baths infused with essential oils and more.
In addition to stress, I also help clients explore how nutrition can affect their skin. For example, dark circles can be banished easily by consuming enough B vitamins which are depleted by stress. Antioxidant rich foods will help banish wrinkles, both when eaten and also when applied to the skin in the form of masks and other poultices. Eating a balanced diet full of healthy whole fruits, veggies, grains, omega-rich fatty acids, soy and lean meats can keep the skin from aging from the inside out, and prevent break outs caused by improper digestion. Tall glasses of pure mineral or high oxygen water will also make our skin not only stay looking younger, but help elimination which can help reduce breakouts.
Essential oils have been so helpful to me in combating not only stress and skin issues, but other medically related issues as well that I have begun to share them with my clients. These fragrant oils can be mixed with your favorite unscented natural based lotions or applied in a carrier oil such as olive oil for drier skin and grapeseed oil for more oily skin. Not only do the oils benefit the skin topically but they can lift your mood and reduce stress. I have begun to study the medicinal properties that have been researched and documented throughout history and been amazed in how powerful they have been for many besides myself.
One of the best ways to help skin regenerate and stay younger looking is to get adequate high quality rest each night. This includes winding down each evening with time for yourself and a cleansing routine that treats the skin gently and is designed for your personal needs.
